Message from the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

As we come to the end of a busy and successful Term 1, I would like to take a moment to thank you all for your continued partnership in supporting the growth and learning of every student at Mother Teresa Catholic College.

Student Reports Now Available

Term 1 reports are now available to view via SEQTA. I encourage you to take some time to sit with your child and discuss their achievements, challenges, and goals moving forward. These conversations are valuable opportunities to celebrate progress and to support your child’s ongoing growth, both academically and personally.

Leadership Update for Term 2

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mrs. Susan McDonald (Vice Principal), who has been appointed Acting Principal at St. Francis College for Term 2. This is a wonderful acknowledgement of her leadership, and we know she will be a blessing to the St. Francis community.

We are also delighted to welcome Mr. Joe Sciorilli as Acting Vice Principal for Term 2. Joe currently serves as Deputy Principal: Learning & Teaching at Ursula Frayne Catholic College and brings with him a wealth of experience in both Deputy and Vice Principal roles. We look forward to the wisdom, energy, and fresh perspectives he will bring to our college.

Vision for Learning—Thank You

A sincere thank you to the many families who have provided thoughtful feedback as we continue to shape our Vision for Learning. Your input has been invaluable as we work collaboratively to ensure our Pre-K to Year 12 framework reflects the values, aspirations, and future needs of our community. We look forward to sharing the draft vision with you in Term 2 and inviting further feedback.

Junior School Sign In / Out

Beginning Term 2, Junior School students who arrive late or need to leave early will be able to sign in or out through the Junior School Reception. This change will streamline the process for our primary school families and provide a smoother transition for our primary school students. External therapists can also sign in and out through the Junior School Reception. I ask parents who utilise external therapists to forward this information to the appropriate people.

Highlights from Term 1

This term has been very busy, from our Opening College Mass to the many sporting events, excursions, immersions, retreats, camps, parent meetings, and classroom experiences. I thank our dedicated staff for their efforts in creating engaging and inclusive learning environments, and I congratulate our students who have demonstrated a positive attitude and willingness to grow.

Wishing You a Blessed Easter

As we move into Easter break, may we each take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Easter— the joy of new life, the gift of hope, and the deep message of love and sacrifice that sits at the heart of our faith. On behalf of the leadership team and staff, I wish you and your families a safe, restful, and holy Easter. May the risen Christ fill your hearts with peace and joy.

Mr. Jay Sutton

Remarkable Start to the Year for Friends of Mother Teresa

This term has marked an exciting beginning for the Friends of Mother Teresa (FOMT). We’ve come together as a newly formed group, established a strong partnership with the College, set our key events for the year, and identified specific fundraising initiatives that will benefit our entire community.

Our first fundraiser of the year, the Easter Raffle and Easter Dress-Up Day, was a tremendous success. We sold 686 raffle tickets, raising $1,170, and collected $1,702.25 from the Dress-Up Day, bringing our total to $2,872.25. We are incredibly proud of the College community for their generous contributions and support. A portion of these funds will be directed towards installing air conditioning in our Parish.

Looking ahead to Term 2, we have some exciting events planned! We will kick off the term with our Mother's Day Hamper Raffle, featuring some incredible prizes. Three hampers will be available, and we’ll also be raffling off a car park space for Term 2. To wrap up the term, we will host the Junior School Disco on Friday, 23rd May.

We are currently seeking donations from local businesses for the Mother’s Day Hampers. If you would like to contribute, please contact us at fomt@motherteresa.wa.edu.au.

Our next committee meeting will be held on Tuesday, 6th May, at 6:30 pm in the College Library. This meeting is open to both committee members and any interested members of the College community.

The FOMT team would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable school holiday and a Happy Easter!

Bon Voyage to Our HASS and Arts Tour Groups!

This week, we bid a fond farewell and safe travels to two exciting student groups embarking on incredible learning adventures.

Our Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) students are heading to the heart of our nation — Canberra — where they will visit Parliament House and engage deeply with Australia's democratic process. From standing in the chambers where laws are made to exploring the symbols of our nation's history, this tour promises to be both educational and inspiring.

Meanwhile, our Arts students are off to the cultural capital of Melbourne, ready to immerse themselves in its vibrant creative scene. With a packed schedule of gallery visits, workshops, and theatre productions that are sure to make us all a little envious, they’ll be soaking up the artistic spirit of one of the world’s great arts cities.

We send our very best wishes to all students and staff travelling on these tours. May your journeys be safe, your experiences rich, and your memories lasting. Know that our prayers and intentions go with you —we’ll be cheering you on from home!

Bon voyage and God bless!

Mud Pies and Clay Cakes: A Nature-Filled Kindergarten Adventure!

This week, our kindergarten students embraced the great outdoors during their Muddy Gully incursion—and what a wonderfully messy, imaginative, and educational experience it was!

Guided by the incredible team from Educated by Nature, our youngest learners were encouraged to explore, create, and connect with the natural world around them. With muddy hands and clay-covered clothes, students immersed themselves in a world of sensory discovery, transforming natural materials into mud pies, clay cakes, and endless creative inventions.

This hands-on experience offered so much more than fun—it supported both individual growth and teamwork, helping students develop problem-solving skills, collaboration, and a deep respect for nature. The joy and wonder on their faces said it all!

A heartfelt thank you to Educated by Nature for fostering such an enriching and memorable incursion. We are so grateful for opportunities like this, where learning meets adventure in the most delightfully muddy way possible.

Message from Head of School: 3 to 6

The end of term has arrived and has given us all an opportunity to reflect on the past 10 weeks of learning and excitement. It has been a wonderful experience to spend time with all the students in the Junior School and be a part of their journey throughout the term.

Most of us are looking forward to having the next two weeks to spend with family and friends. My wish for everyone is to use the break to recharge and rest.

Our MJR focus over the last two weeks of the term has been 'Reflection'. We have been looking at how we have been demonstrating the MJR Virtues, finding examples of the Spirit of Jesus in others, and setting ourselves a goal for the next term. I am looking forward to seeing the goals in action across all of the students in the Junior School throughout Term 2.

Deanne Sutherland.

Sacrament of Reconciliation

An Important Step in Our Year 3 Students’ Faith Journey

Earlier this week, our Year 3 students took part in the Sacrament of Reconciliation—a significant and sacred milestone in their spiritual journey.

Reconciliation is a beautiful sacrament centred on healing, forgiveness, and renewal. It offered our students the chance to pause and reflect on their choices, seek forgiveness, and experience the boundless love and grace of God. This moment not only strengthened their personal relationship with God but also helped them understand the importance of peace—within themselves and with those around them.

We are incredibly proud of each of our Year 3 students for embracing this meaningful step with open hearts and reverence. May this experience continue to guide and inspire them as they grow in faith, love, and compassion.

Project Compassion Fundraising

Thank you to everyone for your support in fundraising for Project Compassion this term. The Year 6 Leaders ran a 'Guess the Number of Eggs' competition and raised almost $300. This, combined with the other classrooms and the Walk for Water donations of $1200, has made the total junior school contribution $1500. Thank you to our community for your support.

First Holy Communion

If you wish to enrol your child in the sacrament of first communion this year, please fill out this form. We will hold the Parent/Student Information Evening in Week 1 on Wednesday, 30 April, starting at 5.30pm in the Occupied Stairs.

Sustainability News—Week 10

A big thank you to everyone who supported our Sustainability Easter Market Stall this week! The Green Team did a fantastic job running the stall, raising an impressive $122. All proceeds will go directly back into the Sustainability Centre, helping us purchase essentials like chicken feed, sawdust, and a special treat—mealworms for our chickens!

It’s been a productive week in the Sustainability Centre, with students getting hands-on in a range of eco-friendly activities. They’ve been:

  • Feeding the fish and cleaning the aquaponics tank

  • Caring for our beloved chickens

  • Collecting brown leaves for the tiger worms to enjoy over the holidays

  • Planting fresh seedlings for our garden beds

  • Harvesting lavender and rosemary to dry for future use

  • Mixing and maintaining our compost

And in the spirit of Easter, the Easter Bunny made a surprise visit on Wednesday, delivering a bundle of carrots for our students to enjoy!

We’re so proud of our students' dedication to caring for the environment and each other. Thank you again for your ongoing support!

Message from Head of School: PK to 2

It’s hard to believe we’re already at the end of Term 1! It’s been a full and lively start to the year, and I couldn’t be prouder of how our early years community has come together these past few months.

There’s been so much to celebrate—new friendships are forming, old ones are growing stronger, and lots of learning is happening in all kinds of ways. Whether it’s been tackling new topics in the classroom, exploring our creativity, or simply learning how to work better together, our students have thrown themselves into the term with energy and enthusiasm.

From our youngest learners in Pre-Kindy, taking their very first steps into the world of school, to our Year 2 students rising to new challenges, it’s been a joy to watch curiosity and confidence blossom across every age group.

We’ve also been journeying through Lent, a time of reflection, growth, and preparing our hearts for Easter. I’ve been so encouraged to see how students and staff alike have taken this season to slow down a little, showing kindness, looking out for one another, and thinking about what it means to live with purpose and compassion.

As we head into the Easter break, I hope everyone finds a moment to rest, reflect, and spend time with loved ones. Whether you're staying close to home or heading away, may it be a time of renewal and joy.

Thank you to our amazing students, our hardworking staff, and our supportive families for making this such a positive and memorable term. I’m already looking forward to everything Term 2 will bring.

Wishing you all a happy and peaceful Easter,

Gemma Johnston.

Junior School Shines at Interschool Swimming Carnival

What a splash-tacular day it was at the Junior School Interschool Swimming Carnival! Our talented swimmers dove into the competition with determination, sportsmanship, and College pride, putting in an outstanding effort across all events.

We are incredibly proud to announce some standout individual achievements:

  • 🏆 Brodie E (Year 5) – Year 5 Boys Champion

  • 🏆 Indi M (Year 5) – Year 5 Girls Champion

  • 🏆 April C (Year 4) – Year 4 Girls Champion

These students displayed excellent technique, courage, and consistency throughout the carnival. Their dedication and strong performances earned them well-deserved titles, and they represented the College with distinction.

In the overall standings, we are thrilled to share that MTCC finished in 3rd place, securing our position in the A Division for next year. This result reflects not only the talent of our swimmers but also the teamwork, preparation, and support from staff, families, and fellow students.

A massive thank you goes to our PE staff and support crew, who helped prepare our students so thoroughly, and to the cheerleading squad of parents and carers, who created a wonderful atmosphere on the day.

Congratulations to all our Junior swimmers—you’ve done us proud!

Year 11 Set Sail on the Swan!

Last week, our Year 11 students left the classroom behind and boarded the Crystal Swan for their much-anticipated annual River Cruise—and what an unforgettable evening it was!

This special event has long been a highlight on the Year 11 calendar, offering more than just a night of fun. It served as a meaningful opportunity for students to strengthen friendships, share laughs, and celebrate the journey they’ve been on together. The spirit of unity and joy filled the air from the moment they stepped aboard.

Even a few unexpected jet skiers couldn’t dampen the mood! Despite the surprise splash, our students kept the good vibes going strong with wide smiles and infectious energy.

As the boat cruised down the beautiful Swan River, students danced, connected, and created memories that will no doubt stay with them for years to come. It was a night that captured the essence of adventure, friendship, and the exciting path that lies ahead.

Here’s to setting sail into the future with confidence and great company by your side!

Vaping Education for Year 8-12 Students

On Monday, 7 March, we were privileged, as a College community to have Azalene Williams present to us on the harmful effects of vaping and other substance-related issues. Azalene is known for her work in promoting awareness about the risks of vaping and its impact on health, especially for adolescents. Her presentations typically align with the efforts of schools and organisations to create safe environments for students, making her an effective presenter in addressing the harmful effects of vaping in educational settings.

Azalene’s engaging and accessible communication style ensures she captures her audience’s attention, incorporating real-life stories and case studies. Her use of research-based information explains the short- and long-term health risks associated with vaping, ensuring the physical and emotional safety of students by educating them about harmful behaviours and helping them understand the consequences. She encouraged students to think critically about the choices they make, particularly around peer pressure and societal influences that promote vaping. Her presentation emphasised the importance of making informed, healthy decisions and equipping students with strategies to resist the pressures they face

This incursion contributes to the broader school culture of safety and support as mandated by the CEWA Keeping Children Safe Framework, fostering a safe, informative, and supportive environment where students’ health and well-being is a priority.

Pathways to Medicine—Notre Dame University Info Session

This week, our Year 11 and 12 students had the opportunity to attend an information session hosted by a representative from Notre Dame University, focused on pathways into medicine and other health-related fields.

The session, held after school, saw a fantastic turnout of proactive and engaged students eager to explore their future in healthcare. They gained valuable insights into different pathways, entry requirements, and the application processes involved in pursuing a medical or health science career.

It was inspiring to see so many of our senior students taking initiative and thinking ahead about their post-school options. A big thank you to Notre Dame University for sharing their time and expertise and to our students for their enthusiasm and curiosity!

Cross Country Carnival 2025—A Picture-Perfect Day of Pride and Perseverance

What a glorious day we had for this year’s Cross Country Carnival! With blue skies overhead and spirits running high, our students took to the course with grit, grace, and plenty of determination. From the starting line to the final sprint, the energy was electric, and the encouragement from the sidelines—especially from our wonderful parents—made all the difference.

A heartfelt thanks must go to Mr. Cranwell, whose on-the-field interviews and colourful commentary kept the crowd both informed and thoroughly entertained. Mr. Norris' meticulous planning and coordination, coupled with his enthusiasm, ensured the day ran smoothly behind the scenes. Of course, we must give a huge shout-out to our secondary staff, who manned their stations like seasoned pros and ensured everything ran smoothly like a freshly marked track.

But let’s not forget the real stars of the show—our students. Every runner, regardless of place or pace, demonstrated outstanding commitment and College spirit. To those who placed in the top two of their division—bravo!

KIC iSCIENCE Graduation—Celebrating Our Future Scientists and Engineers

Congratulations to our amazing Year 10 students Vinaya, Andrea, Yohan, and Shivani, who were among 34 students to successfully graduate from the Term One 2024 KIC iSCIENCE Project. The graduation ceremony took place on Wednesday night, marking the culmination of an enriching STEM-focused experience.

A special shoutout to Yohan, who was one of only two students selected to host the evening—a fantastic recognition of his leadership and communication skills. All of our students delivered impressive presentations to an audience of families, school representatives, and KIC member company delegates, proudly sharing what they had learned and achieved throughout the program.

Over the term, students participated in an exciting variety of hands-on STEM experiences, including:

  • A full day of science-focused activities at Murdoch University

  • A hydraulics workshop at Gilmore College

  • Industry site tours at Coogee Chemicals and CSBP

Debbie Hoey, Education Development Officer for KIC, described the group as “an absolute pleasure to work with,” expressing hope that the skills and knowledge gained will help guide students in their future personal and professional journeys.

The KIC iSCIENCE Program, endorsed by SCSA (School Curriculum and Standards Authority), offers a C grade WACE unit equivalent upon successful completion of the iProject and attendance at the annual KIC iCONFERENCE later in the year.

Here’s what some of our students had to say about the experience:

"It was an amazing program that I'm so happy to have experienced. I learned time management, communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking."Shivani

"My favourite part was the Murdoch excursion where we solved a cold case, made a DIY rocket, and explored the campus. I’d definitely recommend it!" - Vinaya

"The breakout box challenge pushed us out of our comfort zones and showed how fun problem-solving can be. I now understand so much more about university and future careers." - Vinaya

"This program gave me great friendships and helped me understand engineering better. It’s a must for any Year 10 thinking about a STEM pathway." - Andrea

We're so proud of these students for making the most of this incredible opportunity and representing our school with such passion and professionalism.

Year 7 Adventure Camp

On Wednesday morning last week, a gaggle of around 180 excited and nervous Year 7s was funnelled onto buses destined for the Swan Valley Adventure Camp (SVAC). Following some last-minute stresses and solving the bus baggage Tetris puzzle, they headed out with 16 staff members to a location synonymous with vineyards and fine dining. We, however, were seeking mud!

The activities, which involved jumping off treetop platforms and into raging torrents, immediately captivated the students. More sedate activities included piercing distant targets with arrows and plunging from Perth’s largest flying fox. Fueling all of these activities was the wonderful camp cuisine and a youthful spirit of enthusiasm and camaraderie that impressed the SVAC staff and our teachers.

I would like to extend my gratitude to the teachers on the camp, who got involved in everything and set a wonderful vibe for the event. When challenges arose, as they inevitably must with 180 tweenagers gathered in a new and exciting space, the care and skill of our MTCC staff was exceptional and ensured that every student felt included and had a memorable experience.

This was the first time that the Year 7 student body has represented the College in the world outside our campus, and they were truly magnificent. Their effervescent approach to the activities was sustained until the very end, and at all times they were respectful of the campsite, instructors, and our College staff. The support they showed each other resulted in students scaling lofty peaks, both metaphorical and literal, redefining possibilities and expanding their confidence and horizons. They did Mother Teresa Catholic College very proud.

A Journey Through Democracy: My Experience in Canberra
By Ashton Herd

My time in Canberra not only reminded me of the significant historical socioeconomic and political impact of democracy in Australia but also of the evolving policies that continue to shape the present and future of our great southern land.

My journey back in time through the walls of Old Parliament House highlighted the significance of the building, which housed key historical events for the nation, such as Australia's entry into WWII. I was also fortunate to not only visit Parliament House but also to be a part of history by witnessing the budget speech in person and meeting many of the MPs who continue to shape our lives.

Furthermore, I was given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit the Governor-General's House and meet Her Excellency Sam Mostyn in person, with hallways and rooms that have hosted English royalty, including the late Queen Elizabeth II. This will remain a cherished memory, inspiring me to have a stronger and more positive impact on the local community.

Keeping Our Young People Safe Over the School Holidays

As we approach the school holiday break, it’s important to take a moment to reflect on the well-being of our young people. While the holidays can be a time of rest, joy, and connection, they can also be a period where some children and teens may feel more vulnerable or isolated without the routine and support of school life.

We encourage all parents and caregivers to check in regularly with their children during the break—whether it’s a quiet conversation over breakfast, a shared walk, or simply taking the time to really listen. Open, honest communication can be a powerful tool in supporting a young person’s mental health.

In the rare but serious situation where a child or young person expresses thoughts of self-harm or suicide, it’s critical that help is sought immediately. Please ensure you are aware of the following 24/7 support services, available throughout the holidays:

  • Kids Helpline1800 55 1800
A free, confidential counselling service for children and young people aged 5 to 25. Support is available any time, day or night.

  • CAMHS Crisis Connect1800 048 636
For mental health emergencies, this service connects families with trained clinicians who can assess and support urgent care needs.

Your child’s safety and wellbeing are always our top priority, and that doesn’t stop when the school gates close for the term. Should you or your family need support, please don’t hesitate to access these services.

MTCC Basketball—Grand Final Highlights from the 2025 Summer Season

With poise and power, our U16 boys represented the College with pride. They fought hard to the final siren and showed outstanding leadership and character on the court. Despite not securing the title, they earned and well-deserved their position as Runner-Up.

A Season to Celebrate

This season has reminded us that success isn’t just measured by the scoreboard but by the friendships, growth, and College spirit we share along the way.

Well done to all involved. Go MTCC!
