Project Compassion

Next week, the season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, which also marks the beginning of the annual Caritas Australia Project Compassion Appeal. Donations to Project Compassion allow Caritas Australia, the Catholic Agency for International Aid and Development, to work with local communities around the world to end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity.

The theme of Project Compassion 2023 is ‘For All Future Generations’ and reminds us that the good we do today extends to impact the lives of generations to come. It invites us to make the world a better place by working together now and finding long-term solutions to global issues.  We encourage you to put your compassion into action this Lent through prayer, fasting and almsgiving in support of Project Compassion.

Each class and Homeroom will have a box for donations or you can donate online via the Caritas Australia website at: www.caritas.org.au/project-compassion

K-12 Community Mass

On Wednesday 8 February 2023, our College community joined together to celebrate a whole College Mass. This was a very special moment in the history of our College as it was the first time that Junior, Middle and Senior School students have gathered together as a College community to celebrate the Eucharist. For our Year 12 students, this will be their final year of high school education. For students in our Junior School, the journey is just beginning. We are all at different stages of our life's journey, yet we gathered today as a community of faith, a community that supports and acknowledges the gifts and talents that make our school unique.

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome new staff, students and families to Mother Teresa Catholic College, and we would like to extend a special welcome to our new Parish Priest, Fr Alexis.

Peyton's team played 6 games over 4 days with Peyton scoring the first goal for WA!The team made it through to the quarter-finals but were unfortunately defeated. It was an amazing opportunity for Peyton and the WA state team. Well done!

On Saturday 4 February, Year 11 student Holly-Anne Buchan competed in in the WA State Relay Championship. Holly competed with her team from UWA under very hot weather conditions. Her team, Under 17 Little Athletics, won Gold in the 4 x 100 Under 17 Girls (they were 0.05 off the State record) and Silver in the Under 17 Mixed Distance Medley. What a fantastic achievement!

Year 12 Courses and Careers Expo

On Wednesday 8 February, representatives from South Metropolitan TAFE and five WA Universities presented various pathways and opportunities on offer to our Year 12 students for next year.

Students learned about ‘uni lingo’, the various courses, how to apply and what to look forward to after they graduate. After the presentations, students and families were given the opportunity to attend a mini expo, ask questions and collect brochures and course guides from the representatives.

As our Year 12 students are considering further training and study options for 2024 and beyond, the presentations and expo were extremely valuable for them.  They were respectfully engaged during the presentations and made the most of having one on one conversations afterwards and taking away relevant course information.  We look forward to all of our students following their passion and working in their desired vocation in the future! Below are the university open days for this year that were advertised during the presentation.

Kwinana Industries Council (KIC) Electrotechnology Pre-apprenticeships

On Friday 10 February, 16 Year 11 students started their first year of KIC’s brand new Electrotechnology Pre-apprenticeship at South Metropolitan TAFE. Students were successfully selected for the Pre-apprenticeship following a selection process and a final interview with KIC’s Education Development Officer. During the two-year pre-apprenticeship, students will attend school, complete 150 hours of work placement and attend South Metropolitan TAFE every Friday.

Congratulations to Year 11 student Luke Grant, who was selected for the pre-apprenticeship. We wish him and his peers every success with the program.

Sustainability News

The chickens have returned from their holidays and the students are so excited. Thank you so much to the Stennett and Faed families for taking such good care of them. This week the Year 5 and 6 students came up with a definition for sustainability and brainstormed ways we can make small changes to help our planet. The Pre-Primary students have been caring for the worms giving them fruit scraps and dry leaves from the garden beds.  Our Summer vegetables and herbs are ready for harvesting.

Thank you to the parents who have started the year supporting ‘Waste Free Wednesday’. A waste free lunch box contains no throwaway packaging. Food and drinks are packed in reusable lunch bags or boxes. All containers are resealable so leftover food can be consumed or composted later. Please support us as we try to reduce the amount of waste we are sending to landfill.
