National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The NRW 2022 theme, “Be Brave. Make Change.” is a challenge to all Australians — individuals, families, communities, organisations and government— to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians. Last week our Pre-Primary students were hard at work, creating a spectacular piece of art to celebrate National Reconciliation Week. All three classes came together to collaborate and design the artwork, with each student leaving their mark. Each handprint represents the colours of the Aboriginal flag and our commitment to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Well done Pre-Primary!

PJ Day - College Winter Appeal

On the last day of Term 2 (Friday 1 July), we are having a College Pyjama Day. Students and Staff are encouraged to wear their PJs to school and bring in a gold coin donation. We will be fundraising for the St Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal.

Please ensure children are dressed appropriately in suitable Winter PJs.

The Arts News

Junior School Performing Arts Assembly

On Thursday morning, our Junior School students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 presented a snapshot performance of what they have learned in their Performing Arts specialised classes this semester. The audience was treated to a fantastic showcase of music and dance performed by our students. Thank you to parents and caregivers for braving the cold and joining us in support of our students.
Great job everyone!

‘Once’ The Musical Excursion
On Tuesday 31 May and Tuesday 7 June, Year 9, 10 and 11 Drama students viewed the international smash hit and eight-time Tony Award winning musical ‘ONCE’ - A Black Swan State Theatre Company of WA and Darlinghurst Theatre Company production at The Regal Theatre. Once is a modern-day urban love story of a disheartened Irish musician on the verge of giving up, and a piano-playing Czech immigrant who remind each other how to dream.

Here’s what our students thought:

“The quick wit and humour made the emotional scenes more hard hitting and beautiful.”
- Will, Year 10 Drama Student

“It was a really wholesome and heartwarming story which made most of the audience cry”
- Mimi, Year 10 Drama Student

Sustainability News

Last week the Kindy students were learning about God’s creations. It was a great opportunity to embed being sustainable into our learning. Students planted carrots, broad beans and lettuce in their garden beds. We can’t wait to watch them grow!

The Year 4 students and Mrs Bloxsome from the Waste Sorted Schools Program came out to run a waste audit in the Junior School. The students wore gloves and used tongs while sorting the rubbish into categories before weighing it. We discovered a lot of our waste was coming from snack wrappers, cling wrap and paper waste. Let’s see if we can reduce this waste in the College by supporting ‘Waste Free Wednesday’.

The Pre-Primary students listened to the story ‘Superworm’, and then talked about what our worms like to eat. They collected lots of brown leaves from the oval and added them to the worm farms. The students then had fun trying to find the longest and shortest worm.

The Year 3 students have been attending to the garden beds; planting, weeding and collecting beans from the bushes to dry out and plant next year. They did an amazing job removing the bugs that were eating our vegetable plants as well.

The Year 5 classes learnt about World Environment Day (5th June). We were discussing different ways we can care for our school environment and started collecting items to make a native bee hotel.

The Year 6 students have been giving our chickens lots of love, preparing the dried lavender to make lavender bags and planting potatoes in their garden bed.

Wonder Recycling Rewards Program

Thank you so much to all the families for supporting the ‘Wonder Recycling Rewards Program.’ By collecting soft bread bags of any brand, we can earn reward points to redeem on sports equipment. Please collect your emptied bread bags and place them in the pink boxes at the entrance of the Junior School or the Main Reception.

Let’s all start collecting; reducing our waste going to landfill and making a difference to our world.

Student Achievement

KIC Workplace Learning

Over Week 5 and 6 of Term 2 our first group of KIC Engineering Pre-Apprenticeships completed their initial two week block of workplace learning as part of their Certificate II course. This has given them the opportunity to put what they have been learning at South Metropolitan TAFE into practice and also observe qualified tradespeople in action. Jermaine Autagavaia-Burgoyne was the first VETDSS (Vocational Education and Training Delivered to Secondary Students) student to partake in Workplace Learning with Schenck Process at their Jandakot site and his placement was, in their own words, a ‘roaring success and we look forward to his return again in October’. Jermaine is pictured with the team at Schenck Process that assisted him during his journey.

Well done Jermaine on being a wonderful ambassador for the College, and also to Jeremiah Boxtel and Elis Williams who received positive feedback from their host employers at Ecotech Group and Cays Engineering respectively. Great job!

The Department of Training and Workforce Development - Year 9 Career Taster Program

It’s never too early to start thinking about the world of work! Young people need opportunities to learn from employers about careers and the skills they might need. The Year 9 Career Taster Program (CTP) provides an exciting opportunity to challenge students' thinking, spark their ‘career curiosity’ and make connections between education and post-school opportunities.

The CTP enables Western Australia’s Year 9 students to explore the stages of early career discovery and study pathways, helping them to make informed decisions about their subject selections in Years 10, 11 and 12. The program supports students to become ‘career curious’ and extend their thinking through practical activities and meaningful experiences with the world of work.
