Yr 3 Adopt a Beach Excursion

Following on from our Coastal Critter incursion last week, the Year Three classes set off to Safety Bay near the Safety Bay Yacht Club to take part in an Adopt a Beach excursion, braving the wet and windy elements. The adopt a Beach program was run by Perth NRM (Natural Resource Management) and took students through an informative and hands-on day of dune care coastal conservation.

Students were explicitly shown how to remove their coastal natives from their recyclable pots and then how to plant them appropriately - ensuring correct depth, removing air pockets (which would result in the plant dying), and filling in the holes while creating a bowl shape in the sand to help the plants gather water. Students were able to plant up to ten natives, while also burying and learning about spinifex seeds and how they can aid in dune stabilization.

Towards the end of the conservation experience our host sat us down to pass around some marine curiosities including a shark’s egg, a dolphin’s vertebrae, sea snail eggs, a turtle’s beak, and a dried-up leafy sea dragon.

After all our hard work taking care of our local beach, we decided to take a much-deserved break and headed over to Golden Bay’s Shipwreck Cove for a fish and chip lunch, a play and… more wind and rain.

What a great and informative day!
