ANZAC Service
On Wednesday 26 April, our whole College community joined together to pay our respects to members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) at our ANZAC Service. Through the laying of wreaths, moments of silence and contemplation, we acknowledged their contributions and expressed our appreciation for the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve in the armed forces.
Making Jesus Real
This week we welcomed Peter 'Mitch' Mitchell, founder of the 'Making Jesus Real (MJR)' program, to our Junior School. Mitch facilitated lessons with our MJR classes, workshops with our teachers and presented MJR awards to our students. MJR is a powerful program that helps young people live out their faith in everyday life. With Mitch's guidance, our students will learn practical ways to put their faith into action and make a positive impact on the world around them. This was a perfect opportunity for us to reset our focus, as we continue to make the ‘Spirit of Jesus’ visible in our everyday lives!
Year 10 Retreat
On Friday 28 April, our Year 10 cohort travelled to the Gary Holland Community Centre in Rockingham to participate in their Year 10 Retreat. The theme of the day was ‘Real Relationships’, facilitated by the team from Faith Retreats.
Over the course of the day, students were invited to reflect upon themes such as personal needs in relationships (drawing on concepts such as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs), loving others in a Christ-like manner and navigating difficult social pressures. Students participated in fun and energetic group activities which encouraged teamwork and interaction with peers. They had many opportunities throughout the day to think, reflect, discuss, ask questions, and share plenty of laughs and insights.
This was a wonderful way to kick off Term 2, and we hope our Year 10 students were able to build some 'Real Relationships'!

2023 Canberra Tour
During the April School holidays, Year 9 students and accompanying staff embarked on MTCC's first interstate trip to Canberra!
Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $510 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. A fantastic opportunity for our students!
2023 Sydney Arts Tour
During the April School holidays, our Year 10-12 Performing and Visual Arts students (and accompanying staff) embarked on MTCC's first Sydney Arts Tour. This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to fully immerse themselves in the city's rich arts and culture scene. Here’s a reflection from Year 12 Students Daisy Axon, Edie Curran and Caelyn Grainger:
“The 2023 SYDNEY ARTS TOUR was an enriching opportunity for Year 10 to 12 Performing and Visual Arts students to advance their skills previously learnt in a classroom environment. Through engaging in practical workshops and viewing live performances, students were able to better understand the expectations of professional artists, theatre practitioners and theatre companies. A highlight for many Performing Arts students was the improvisation workshop at the Australian Theatre For Young People. This workshop enabled students to step out of their comfort zone and experiment with different elements of drama. We were also challenged to commit to offers and sustain a consistent rhythm in our performances.
Another highlight for the whole group was the street art tour. We were fortunate to spend the morning off the main street of Newtown exploring the street art and history behind the artists and paintings. We learnt so much about the town and artwork. If you have ever wondered what lies behind all the bustle of King Street, this tour will give you a glimpse.
During our week in Sydney, we were able to watch many incredible performances. ‘Into the Woods’, performed by Belvoir Theatre Company, was no exception. The production showcased musical theatre talent that exceeded our expectations and ‘wowed’ the students. Performed in a small underground theatre, audiences were brought closer to the actor, which allowed students to fully emerge themselves into the scene and live within the action. The costuming was incredible, made up of bright colours and intricate textures, working to build character profiles and fit in the with the Brechtian style of the performance. All musical numbers were choreographed to perfection, combining technique and comedic movement to develop characters and interact with the audience through facial expressions and movement towards them. Another unforgettable memory of the Performing Arts Tour was attending Sydney Theatre Companies (STC) production of “Julia”; an extraordinary new play about former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard. Renown actor Justine Clarke embodied Gillard’s life and career that led to her ‘misogyny speech’. It was both an intimate and compelling performance that every student buzz from the moment the show finished.”

Year 12 ATAR Music Recital
Today our Year 12 ATAR Music students performed a recital as part of their Music course assessment. The assessment required students to perform their piece in front of a live audience based on their chosen discipline. The audience was treated to a spectacular show! Each student demonstrated extraordinary musical talent, and it was evident that a lot of time and practise went into their performances. Each student performed their solo pieces before joining together as an ensemble.
Congratulations to Lizzie Martin (Musical Theatre Vocals), Benny Ybanez (Contemporary Vocals) and Ashley Lightfoot (Contemporary Piano) on their fantastic performances!

Year 12 Outdoor Education Camp
This week, our Year 12 Outdoor Education (ODE) students embarked on their first camp for 2023. Students travelled by bus to the Moore River Estuary and Nilgen Nature Reserve. Here they had the opportunity to try several different adventure activities including kayaking, fishing, sand boarding and swimming.
As part of the Year 12 General Outdoor Education course, students were required to set up their own tents as well as prepare and cook their own meals. Fortunately, they had excellent weather with sunshine and no rain on both days. These conditions, while a little cold, allowed for kayaking and swimming to take place in the Moore River. Students returned back to the College on Wednesday afternoon and headed home with new experiences and memories made on camp.

Sustainability News
Through their inquiry unit, “Me, You and Us” the Pre-Primary students have been learning about the needs of living things in the Sustainability Area. We have been looking at the needs of the bean seeds and seedlings which we planted in the garden beds. Also, we looked after the needs of our much-loved chickens.
The Year 1 students are very excited to be using their plan to now create the butterfly garden. Students found rocks for the butterflies to warm their wings on. They were showing amazing teamwork when deciding where to plant the butterfly attracting plants after reading the plant labels.
Please save all your bread bags and place them in the ‘Wonder Recycling Rewards Boxes’ which are placed at the entrance of the Junior School. There is one in the office at Middle School reception and one at the Sustainability Centre. By collecting the bread bags that would otherwise go to landfill, our College can receive some new sports equipment for our students to play with.
Thank you to all the wonderful parents who support ‘Waste Free Wednesday’ in our College. A waste free lunch contains no throwaway packaging with all fruit and vegetables scraps going to our worms and chickens. At the moment, we are seeing a lot of rubbish around our beautiful grounds. By participating in ‘Waste Free Wednesday’, we are making a small step to reducing the amount of waste we send to landfill.
