Message from the Executive Director

Dear Colleagues, Parents and Friends of Catholic education,

We are three-quarters of the way through another school year. With the conclusion of Term 3, it is a good time to reflect on the achievements of the year so far and to look forward to a final push for a busy Term 4.

I wish to particularly acknowledge our Year 12 students as their Catholic school journeys come to an end and their focus shifts to exams. As they leave our schools, I hope they look back on their education with affection and feel supported to reach the academic goals they have set themselves next term.

This term we witnessed the array of talent on display in our schools with more than 18,000 entries from 105 schools in the Spirit of the Arts Festival. We enjoyed dancers, musicians and performing artists showcasing their God-given talents to the delight of audiences throughout the term. I want to congratulate every student who took part and acknowledge the efforts of those teachers, parents and volunteers who supported the smooth running of the Festival. I extend my gratitude to the Catholic Arts team who help ensure that these events are a memorable experience for students taking part.

I would also like to congratulate Mary’s Mount Catholic Primary School, who are the first school in Australia to receive a Level 5 Catholic Earthcare School Certification, and St Joseph’s School, Waroona, who won a National Science Week grant to host a STEMathon in August. It is so encouraging to see our schools recognised for the groundbreaking work they do.

I am sure like me, many of you will have been captivated by the Olympics this year. The feats of physical endurance, mental strength, and the comradery between team-mates has been great to see. We are particularly proud of those of our alumni who have reached the pinnacle in their sports by becoming Olympians including Lauren Reynolds (BMX), Jake Harvie (Hockey), Kyle Lee (marathon swimming), Peter Bol (athletics), Rhiannon Clarke (paralympic athletics), and Alex Saffy (paralympic swimming). Our schools have a long tradition of supporting young people to discover their talents in all disciplines and to strive for excellence both at school and once they graduate. It is a source of pride to see former students shine on the world stage.

During July and August, school and office leaders have come together for our Leaders’ Forum Roadshows held at seven Catholic schools around WA, as well as the University of Notre Dame Broome campus and the Catholic Education Office in Leederville. This year leaders focused on the importance of effective political engagement, how best to represent our school communities as well as the role of AI in analysing system level data. I thank everyone involved in the planning of these significant events as well as those leaders who attended the Forums. If you are interested in the requests Catholic education has put to political parties for their consideration you can visit https://fairfunding.cewa.edu.au/.

Next term we will celebrate the recipients of the annual Quality Catholic Education (QCE) Awards. These Awards celebrate the outstanding innovation and initiative of our schools. With 89 nominations this year, some of the projects include: a Pre Primary Prayer Bag initiative; Laudato Si’ in Action; a Black Cockatoo Conservation Project; a Ladies Lunch; Esports Club; and Lego Therapy Program. The breadth of work being done in Catholic schools across our State is extraordinary and I look forward to celebrating the winners when they are announced in October.

Also in October, we will thank those of our colleagues who have given 30, 40 and 50 years of service to Catholic education. This is a special time to reflect on the devotion and commitment of staff to supporting the development of generations of children and young people in our schools.

I look forward to welcoming you back for the final term of the year and wish you and your loved ones a safe and restful break.

Wayne Bull
Executive Director

Message from the Principal

Today our Year 12 students complete their formal schooling and I am sure there are a number of students who cannot quite believe their time at the College is coming to an end – I would certainly imagine there are some parents who are wondering where that time has gone too. The final days of teaching and learning will help the students prepare for their last assessments and I would like to acknowledge the extra special efforts of the Year 12 teachers who will be active at the College over the holidays finalising examinations and results. Several students over the holidays will be completing their WACE practical examinations along with final Year 12 Examinations. Best wishes to all students with their forthcoming assessments. It is an exciting time for the students, however, there are a number who have their WACE examinations commencing on 28 October 2024. It is important that we support them up to this time and provide encouragement so that they can sustain their efforts.

Today the Year 12 graduating students were involved in several activities commencing with their breakfast at the College and then the final Year 12 assembly in the College Gymnasium. It was a day that highlighted - respect, dignity, pride and celebration in what the students had been involved in during their time at MTCC. Over the past two years, the graduating students have established a high standard for the last day of Year 12 and it has set up a very positive model for other students to follow. The Year 12 students’ participation today has shown appreciation for what they have received from the College over their time at MTCC and I look forward to the formal Graduation on Friday 18 October 2024.

Following the trial examinations, the ATAR students will return to school to gather feedback and do their final preparation for the WACE Examinations commencing on Monday 28 October 2024. It is important students are aware of the expectation on their return to school as we are providing them with important final arrangements for the examinations. Can I please remind students and families of Year 12s, if they require assistance with examination preparation, please contact the school and we can provide support with questions or areas of concern.

Congratulations to the Year 6 students who received the sacrament of Confirmation at the Parish Mass last Saturday night. Fr Vincent Glynn, Vicar General, presided the Mass and was very pleased with the preparation the students had received both at MTCC and the parish. Congratulations to all students and to the staff who prepared them. It was pleasing to witness the family members in attendance and the way all were supportive and involved in the Mass. The two sacraments, First Communion and Confirmation celebrated this term have been highlights on the College calendar and display the importance of the conferring of the sacraments in nurturing the growth in faith of our students and the community at MTCC more broadly.

The Primary school Athletics Carnival and the ACC Athletics Carnival for the Secondary students were held two weeks ago. Congratulations to all who participated in these events and those who may have received special recognition of their performances. Success in athletics is very much about personal best achievement and it is important to recognise all who were involved as without your participation the events would not have been as successful as they were. Thank you to the competitors and to the staff who prepared the carnival and the training over the past term.

The term has gone quickly and I would like to thank all in the community for their support and work they have produced during the term. We look forward to the commencement of Term 4 and what is to come. To our students and staff, have a restful and safe holiday, and we look forward to students returning on Monday 7 October. A reminder that students are to wear their Summer uniform at the commencement of Term 4.

Mr. Joe Hoyne
Principal

Year 12’s Final Day

Today, we bid farewell to our wonderful Year 12 students, the Class of 2024! Their final day began with a special breakfast in the Café, generously provided by the Friends of Mother Teresa (FOMT). We extend our thanks to FOMT for their ongoing support and contribution to this memorable occasion.

Following breakfast, the students made their way to their last College Assembly, held in the gymnasium. We took this opportunity to reflect on their journey, present awards, and acknowledge their accomplishments. Junior School students formed a guard of honour for our Year 12s, stretching from the gymnasium all the way to the admin building, in a moving show of support and pride.

It was a beautiful and fitting final day for the Class of 2024. We wish them all the best in their upcoming exams and look forward to celebrating their official Graduation next term.

Congratulations, Class of 2024! More photos and videos coming soon...

First Reading Magic

On Tuesday 17 September, we had our first reading of Harry Potter and The Cursed Child - Secondary School Edition. The room was buzzing with excitement as our talented cast got their first look at the script, bringing characters to life with their voices and energy.

In theatre, the first reading is a crucial milestone—it's the moment when the script moves off the page and begins its transformation into a living, breathing performance. It’s where the cast first come together as a team, setting the foundation for the magic that’s about to unfold on stage!

The energy, enthusiasm, and talent in the room were nothing short of incredible. We are beyond excited for what's to come as we embark on this unforgettable journey together. Stay tuned for more updates as we dive deeper into rehearsals and start creating magic!

MTCC MasterChef 2024

The Year 12 MTCC MasterChef Challenge provided an exciting opportunity for students to demonstrate their culinary talents by crafting flavourful dishes using minimal ingredients. Challenges like these not only put their culinary skills to the test, but also foster creativity and resourcefulness in the kitchen.

Congratulations to Keylia McAlpine and Charlie Muggeridge for their exceptional Chickpea Curry and Naan Bread. It's always impressive when participants create such remarkable dishes, making the judging process a real challenge.

It’s been a wonderful year of cooking with our Year 12s, and we hope they continue to build on their skills in the future.

Year 12 Metalwork Pit Bikes

Our talented Year 12 Metalwork students have been hard at work this year on an impressive and challenging project—Design and Create a Pit Bike. This project not only tests their technical skills but also provides a unique opportunity to combine creativity with mechanical engineering principles, resulting in a functioning, custom-built pit bike.

Students were required to follow detailed production procedures to bring their designs to life. From the initial concept to the final product, they demonstrated their ability to select appropriate materials and apply both hand and machine processes. The project demanded mastery of essential metalworking techniques, including marking, cutting, bending, preparing, and joining metal components, as well as applying a professional finish.

Throughout the project, students encountered real-world engineering challenges that required them to think critically and develop solutions. By the end of the task, each student had created a fully operational pit bike, showcasing their skills in both design and fabrication. These innovative and functional creations will be proudly displayed during the Arts and Technologies Exhibition Evening in Week 3 of Term 4, where the entire school community will have the chance to admire the creativity, precision, and hard work that went into each bike.

This project has been an incredible learning experience for our Year 12 students, helping them gain practical, industry-relevant skills that will undoubtedly serve them well in future mechanical or engineering pursuits. We are proud of their achievements and look forward to seeing their continued success beyond the workshop.

Western Australian Schools' Constitutional Convention

The Western Australian Schools' Constitutional Convention is a premier event for WA students, bringing together Year 11 Politics & Law students from across the state to engage with academic and professional experts on topics related to Australia’s Constitution and democratic system of government. Last week, Year 11 ATAR Politics and Law students William Chaplyn, Ashton Herd, and Saffi Satya represented the College admirably, collaborating with peers from various schools across Western Australia.

This year's convention focused on the question, "Does Australia need a Bill of Rights?" It provided students with the opportunity to explore how rights are currently protected in Australia and around the world.

The event featured an opening address by His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson AC APM, Governor of Western Australia. Students also heard from prominent academics and industry experts, including Dr. Hannah McGlade and Dr. Mary Ann Kenny, who discussed the definition and protection of human rights in Australia compared to models used in other countries.

Our students now have the opportunity to apply to represent Western Australia on a fully funded trip to Canberra in March 2025, where they will attend the National Schools' Constitutional Convention. Well done all!

Courage to Remember

On Tuesday 10 September, Year 11 and 12 Modern History students were invited to attend the 'Courage to Remember' workshop at the Holocaust Institute of Western Australia. During this workshop, they listened to the powerful stories of Holocaust survivors and engaged in hands-on activities to humanise the history of the Holocaust.

Our students left the newly opened JHUB in Yokine with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Holocaust's impact on both the Jewish community and the world.

Charley Goldsmith - Year 11
”I really enjoyed the excursion on Tuesday. I found it extremely informative, and it allowed us to all capture that lives taken in the holocaust were not just a statistic but actually a person that had individual circumstances and personal stories. I am thankful of was given the opportunity to extend my knowledge.”

Harry Nash - Year 11

“What I enjoyed about this excursion was the way in which the presenter put into perspective how much of a horror the holocaust was. It made me feel more connected to it, whilst also deepening my level of understanding about the events that occurred.”

VET & Workplace Learning News

KIC iDiversity

Recently, two Year 10 boys were offered the chance to participate in the KIC iDiversity program. It explores the range of careers available in the Kwinana Industrial Area and gives students the opportunity to get an insight into what industry does, and into what industry expects of employees.

Over 6 days in Term 4 students visit a range of working environments within the KIA, meet current employees in a range of roles and have the opportunity to reflect on their possible future involvement in the local workforce.

Students will also have a day of work experience with a local host employer or participate in some voluntary work (ie. beach rehabilitation). Other activities include teambuilding, improving confidence and self esteem, resume writing, social media, personal and presentation skills. Thank you to everyone involved for a fun and informative 6 days.

Blaize Connor
”At the KIC workshops, I enjoyed the environmental day out to the beach. It was fun learning about taking care of the beaches and helping restore the sand dunes with the weeding of the new plants. I learned a lot about the construction industry and the site tour of CSPB was interesting. I met new people and got tips on how to write a good resume for when I leave school. I enjoyed it.”

Jack Bond
”I have learned on one of the tours that CSBP make lithium batteries and fertiliser and bleach. We did a site tour and saw how it all works. At the construction centre we got to see what people in the construction industry do. There are lots of jobs in the industry I didn't realise. I know how to write a proper resume and what you should and should not to do in interviews! If I was to work in the construction industry I think I would like to use machinery. It was tricky in a short space of time but I think I would get the hang of it.”

Library News

The last two weeks of the term in the Library have given primary students a chance to explore new books and play some Library games as a treat to end the term. The Lego club has been rapidly working on The Eiffel Tower but didn’t manage to finish it, so they will persevere next term.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge finished up on September 9th. If your child/ren signed up, you are able to view their final book tally on your account. We had several amazing readers with Evelyn McLeod (Year 4) and Leo Clarke (Year 3) each reading over 100 books since May. Amazing work!

Lastly, we have started gearing up for the big events of Term 4, which are our Spooktacular Books Fairs. This year, we are trialling a High School book fair, organised through QBD, running from the 21 – 25 October. This will be available before and after school, and most days during lunch. The Scholastic book fair will run from October 29 – November 4.

We look forward to seeing you all there!

Sustainability News

Thank you to our school community for supporting the Sustainability Market stall run by our amazing Green Team students last week. We raised $120 which will go back into the Sustainability Centre to buy food, hay, corn and meal worms for our much-loved chickens. The student then had the opportunity to taste them raw and cooked.

The Pre-primary students had fun learning about how to care for our school chickens, fed them fresh corn on the cob and then collected the eggs. The Year 2 students have been planting lots of vegetable seedlings and sunflower seeds in the garden beds. They will be caring for them as they grow.

The Year 3-6 students have been designing and creating the scarecrow Daisy McDonald from Old McDonald’s Sustainable Farm. Everything they used was reused, repurposed or recycled. The scarecrow has been entered into the Royal Show Scarecrow Competition in the Jubilee Pavilion. A big Thank You to the super talented Braxton, Mahli, Olivia, Violet and Zahlee for making the ducks, rooster and chickens with our wonderful art teacher, Mrs Cipriano.
