Online Safety with Paul Litherland

This week, we were fortunate enough to welcome Paul Litherland of Surf Online Safe to the College to speak to students from Year 5 to Year 12. Paul also delivered a highly informative parent information session on Wednesday evening.

As a WA Police Force veteran with over 20 years of experience, and working within the Technology Crime Investigation Unit for 6 years, there was no one better suited to prepare our students for the risks of the online world.

Paul provided our students with important information about social media and tips on how they can stay safe online. These workshops were so beneficial for our students, staff and College community. We thank Paul for sharing his invaluable expertise and advice!

Year 9 and 10 Indonesian Cultural and Lunch Excursion

In the last week of Term 3, Year 9 and 10 Indonesian students went on an Indonesian Excursion. The first stop was the Indonesian Consulate General in Perth, where they learnt to play gamelan, a traditional Indonesian ensemble of percussive instruments, and Indonesian line dances called Poco-poco and Gemu Famire.

Afterwards, students went to Dapur Van Java, an Indonesian restaurant in Victoria Park, for lunch. The delicious aroma of Indonesian spices could be smelled as soon as students got off the bus! Ibu Anna, the owner of the restaurant, welcomed the group in Indonesian and they ordered their food and drink in Indonesian. The students had martabak telur, Indonesian style omelette, for appetiser and had a variety of Indonesian dishes such as nasi goreng, mie goreng, ayam madu, sate ayam and empal penyet. Martabak manis, Indonesian style pancake filled with chocolate and cheese, was served for dessert. Everything tasted delicious! What a great day! Hebat!

Below are some of the students’ reflections on the excursion:

”This Indonesian Excursion was really fun. We started off with getting to meet the staff from Indonesian Consulate General, they were very baik hati (kind) dan humoris (funny). We learned the dance called “Poco-poco” and it was very easy while the “Gemu Famire” was a bit more complicated. I won a prize for the best dancer in the Gemu Famire. After that, we went to the music room and learn how to play Gamelan. It was also very complicated to learn but very fun. We then headed back to the main room and we got served with these really good doughnuts and muffins while watching a short Indonesian feature film. Afterwards, we headed to the restaurant and the vibes were very amazing and the staff was very ramah (friendly) and accommodating. The food was enak sekali and so was the drink. Overall, the excursion was very fun, amazing and a great experience for me, it helped me learn and discover many other various facts about Indonesia.”
(Yohan Yu, Year 9)

“I loved the excursion, it was so much fun. All the activities and the experience at the restaurant was incredible. The gamelan, Poco-poco, and Gemu Famire were amazing experience. It was so lovely to connect with more Indonesian people at the Consulate and the restaurant, and practice speaking in Indonesian. The food was delicious, and I am definitely going back to the restaurant.”
(Georgia Saviel, Year 9)

I found the dancing and musical instruments interesting and enjoyable, and I found the Indonesian restaurant very nice, with delicious food, particularly the desert. I would definitely want to experience this again.
(Lucas Clarke, Year 9)

I had a lot of fun at the Consulate General playing the Gamelan and learning Poco-poco. I love playing the different instruments especially the gong. We also watched an interesting short movie about different Indonesian traditions. I loved going to Dapur Van Java because I love the food and seeing Ibu Anna and Ibu Koko. I order Mie Goreng Jawa and it tasted amazing like I expected it to. I made extra special memories with the Year Nine and other Year Ten students on the bus doing Karaoke and putting on an Indonesian song performance for Ibu Wijayanti, Ibu Magwa and Pak Jendria. I rate this experience an 11/10. A big thank you to Ibu Wijayanti.
(Genevieve De Knegt, Year 10)

Year 10 students have also created a video blog on the excursion.

Sustainability News

Our scarecrow, Daisy McDonald, won the ‘Scarecrow Competition’ at this year’s Perth Royal Show, competing against 85 other schools! Daisy McDonald represents Old McDonald’s Sustainable Farm, where everything was reused, recycled or repurposed. The creative, talented Year 3-6 students had the opportunity to create the farm animals and scarecrow during their Sustainability lessons at the end of Term 3.

A big thank you to Violet, Braxton, Zahlee, Olivia, and Mahli- for crafting the duck, rooster and chickens alongside our talented Visual Arts teacher, Mrs Cipriano.

Our vegetables are growing in the garden beds which the students have been caring for. We have broad beans, kale, lettuce, beetroot, carrots, broccoli and brussel sprouts thriving. Since we don’t use any chemicals in our garden the students have been catching the cabbage moths with the nets to remove them from our plants.  We are also hatching some ladybug eggs to eat any aphids, scale insects and mites.

At lunchtime students have been coming into the Sustainability area to look at the worms, water their plants and spend some calming time with the chickens. The chickens provide a judgement free space for students to process their emotions as well as providing comfort, joy and happiness.

At the end of each Sustainability lesson the students have been picking and tasting the ripe mulberries, which they enjoy.

The students are doing an amazing job putting all their cans/bottles into the “Containers for Change Bins” around the school. All the money raised goes to the P&F.

Thank you to our wonderful families who support “Waste Free Wednesday.” A waste free lunch contains no throwaway packaging which helps reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill each day. We are collecting egg cartons and buttons at the Sustainability area. If you have any you are not using, please drop them off in the labelled containers.
