Project Compassion
Lent is a time of renewal for us, and a big part of that includes personal sacrifice and giving. As a school, during Lent, we support a major fundraising activity known as Project Compassion. This project encourages Australians to raise much-needed funds to help alleviate poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity in the most vulnerable communities in the world.
Project Compassion collection boxes were placed in your Homeroom folders at the beginning of Lent. Homeroom teachers were asked to use that to collect much needed donations from your Homeroom students. We are now heading towards the home straight for this drive and are looking to come around to your Homerooms to collect what you have.
If you still need motivation for students please go to the Project Compassion website where you will find videos and other useful information. The videos will help students to connect with the authentic stories of people who are in need will make this drive more real for them.
In these last few weeks of Lent there is still time to do a fundraiser with your class. Bake sales, raffles and savings from sacrifices or jobs done are ways to engage students. Setting a weekly or a daily target is a great way to set the bar and gain student interest. Your commitment to our school drive and to those less fortunate is greatly appreciated.

Science in Year 3
This Term we have been learning about Chemical Science in Year 3. We have investigated solids, liquids and gases and how they can change from one form to another when temperatures differ. We have grown crystals, made pancakes, melted ice, boiled water and made jelly to show our learning. We even got to design our own experiments to prove that matter can change forms! Great Scientific investigation skills Year 3!

First Whole College Assembly (K-12)
On Wednesday 28 February, our College gathered for the first-ever whole school (Kindy to Year 12) assembly in our spectacular new Gymnasium! We took a stroll down memory lane, reflecting on the highlights of 2023 and celebrating a decade of excellence as a College.
Opening the recently dug-up time capsule brought back cherished memories for our foundation students and staff members, connecting our past to the vibrant present. We welcomed recent graduate and College Dux award recipient Daisy Axon (Class of 2023) to share some insights into life after graduation.
The Gymnasium echoed with applause as our talented students dazzled us with phenomenal musical performances. We also had the opportunity to formally announce and congratulate our new student leaders, who received well-deserved recognition for their leadership roles.
Here's to many more moments of unity, achievement, and growth in our new Gymnasium!
Azelene Williams - Risks of Vaping Presentation
On Tuesday 27 February, we welcomed Azelene Williams back to the College to deliver a presentation to our Year 7-11 students on the risks of vaping.
Azelene drew on her own experience as a teenager who smoked and later turned to vaping. Through extensive research, she used current evidence which contributed to theory and health aspects of the presentation. She discussed key concepts and theories around vaping and nicotine addiction.
We hope this presentation will encourage our students to make informed and positive choices around vaping.
Year 8 Retreat
On Friday 1 March, our Year 8 students embarked on a faith enrichment and character-building retreat at the Gary Holland Community Centre. Throughout the day, students engaged in prayer, reflection, and activities that encouraged them to contemplate their beliefs and values, forming bonds and friendships that reinforce the sense of unity cherished at Mother Teresa Catholic College.
We hope our Year 8s had an enjoyable and insightful retreat! It was a fantastic opportunity for the cohort to join together and strengthen their bonds.
International Women’s Day Event
On Wednesday 6 March, the Student Leaders in Years 8 through to 12 went on an exciting excursion to Emmanuel Catholic College to witness the International Women’s Day event run by the Fremantle Dockers. Hearing from inspirational elite athletes and entrepreneurs, we learned about how to manage stress, see the oncoming warning signs of burnout, learn how to prevent it, as well as adapting a growth mindset. Hearing how these elite athletes use these tactics every day can be related back to our stressful lives as high school students.

Bella Mihyo (Year 8) 2024 Lester Prize Youth Awards Finalist
We are thrilled to announce that Year 8 student, Bella Mihyo, has been selected as a finalist (Years 7-8 category) in the 2024 Lester Prize Youth Awards. It’s the first time we’ve had a finalist in this very prestigious nationwide portraiture competition for students from Years 7-12.
Bella’s portrait is of her father, Edgar, and is such a stunning representation of him. She has completed this portrait in coloured pencils - her first time working with this medium for this kind of work.
Read her artist statement below:
"Edgar is my dad. When I look at his face, he makes me feel happy and safe. Joy resonates from his smile and I know that he is both sincere and genuine. Like a king, like a ruler who has responsibilities for his people, my dad takes care of me with empathy and good humour. His wisdom and intelligence guides me and I appreciate him so much.
In this portrait, I have tried to portray my dad as a regal man and have presented him in royal-like regalia drawing on his African heritage, especially with the jewels in the crown and the patterning on his jacket. I hope to show his bubbly personality and the spark that I see whenever I spend time with him."
Bella’s artwork will be on display and open to the general public at the WA Museum Boola Bardip in the Old Gaol Exhibition Space from Friday 12 April - Sunday 14 July 2024. The awards ceremony will take place in mid-April, at which time the winning artworks will be announced.
Congratulations Bella - a fantastic achievement!

Year 9 Career Taster Day
On Friday 1 March, a group of Year 9 students participate in the Year 9 Career Taster Program (CTP) at North Metropolitan TAFE. The program aims to inspire students to become 'career curious' about further study opportunities and potential careers.
Students took part in industry-led experiences and activities which introduced them to new and different areas of work and career opportunities in the Events and Planning Industry. Activities included designing centrepieces, organising seating plans and designing invitations for an event.
Our students enthusiastically completed all tasks to a high standard and enjoyed experiencing a day in the life of TAFE students. We hope our students enjoyed this insightful experience!
Host Employers Required for Workplace Learning
Our Year 10 students will once again be out in the community in Term 2, 17 – 28 June, for five and ten-day blocks (Monday – Friday), thanks to the support of local companies.
If you have, or know of, a business willing to accept students from the College for a one or two week placement during the dates above, or you have a question about the workplace learning program, please contact Mrs Andrea Sainty (VET/Workplace Learning Coordinator) on 9599 7002 or email andrea.sainty@cewa.edu.au. Workplace learning can be a very valuable program for students in terms of knowledge, skills and practice as well as the WACE Unit Equivalent provided by this endorsed program. Workplace learning can benefit employers too.
We also have Year 11 and 12 students who are completing a VET (Vocational Education and Training) qualification as part of their studies and need to complete mandatory relevant industry workplace learning.
Thank you for your consideration. It would be wonderful if you could help support the College by giving our young adults some helpful, practical experience at work.
KIC iScience Project
Year 10 student, Mia Robbie, has been selected to participate in the 2024 KIC iSCIENCE Project. On Wednesday 28 February, Mia attended an Information Night with 34 students from other schools in the region, to find out more about the program before it started this week.
The KIC iSCIENCE Project is being held over 7 days in March and is targeted towards Year 10 students who will do ATAR in Years 11 and 12 and go onto University when they finish school. During the program, students will go on site tours; participate in a series of workshops including creating a professional resume, health and wellbeing, social media, bullying, mental health, personal & presentation skills. They will also visit the Construction Training Fund (Construction Futures Centre) in Belmont and participate in a half day volunteering session with Perth NRM.
The program will provide students with valuable information about Science, Math and Technology courses when they visit Murdoch University where they will have the opportunity to meet lecturers and tour the campus. Students who successfully complete the program will graduate on the last day.
Congratulations and good luck Mia!
Sustainability News
Last week the students participated in Clean Up Schools Day. During Sustainability lessons, students developed an understanding of the impact of waste on our environment. They learnt how to reduce, reuse and recycle to minimise the impact. Our students did an amazing job tidying up our school grounds to foster a cleaner, greener tomorrow.
Our much-loved Polish chickens have returned to school after their holiday. They are very happy to see the students and scratch around in the garden beds eating all the bugs.
Our tiger worms are enjoying all the left-over classroom crunch scraps. The students are doing a great job bringing their worm bucket to the sustainability area everyday. Another way we are reducing waste going to landfill.
A very big thank you to Mrs Hodgson, Mrs Elphinstone, Miss Mann, Mrs Sneyd and Mrs Van Der Kwast for giving up their busy morning on Tuesday and Thursday to make the delicious apple slinkies. We all appreciate your hard work, effort and time. You are amazing!
