Annual Community Meeting
On Tuesday 14 November, we held our Annual Community Meeting (ACM) with over 150 staff, parents and caregivers in attendance. It was a great opportunity to reflect on the highlights of 2023, our current financial position and staffing for 2024. We heard from our School Advisory Council Chairperson, Mr Ted Simpson, Business Manager, Mrs Michelle Reed and College Principal, Ms Geri O'Keefe. Our Parish priest, Fr Alexis Vega-Orsorio, concluded the evening with a special prayer and blessing.
We thank everyone who joined us for an evening of discussions and insights. All ACM reports will soon be available to download from the College website.
Remembrance Day Service
On Friday 10 November, the College came together for a solemn Remembrance Day Service to honour the brave members of the Australian Defence Force. We welcomed Commander Bauer from the Royal Australian Navy to address the College. Beautiful wreaths were laid and we observed a two minute silence to remember and reflect. It was wonderful to witness our College community joining together to remember all who have served and continue to serve in our armed forces, especially those who have died and those wounded in battle.
We thank our student cadets for their official service today and our defence families and special guests for joining our service. It was great to see so many uniformed defence personnel supporting our students and the College. Lest we forget.
WATechTalk
In Week 5, Mother Teresa Catholic College hosted the very first WATechTalk Secondary event in the Learning Hub. The focus of this event was Transforming Learning with iPad in Secondary English and Humanities. Over thirty educators attended the event and saw teachers from Mother Teresa Catholic College, Scotch College, and Corpus Christi College present three-minute showcases sharing their digital integration stories.
Congratulations to our Secondary teachers Natarra Buck and Emily McRedmond who presented showcases on behalf of the College and shared some excellent (and very practical) examples of transformative learning with iPad. For more information on digital learning at MTCC, see our website and vision for digital teaching and learning.
A Day of Swift Coding
Our Year 10 Digital Technologies students were invited by Apple Education to participate in the 2024 Swift Student Challenge, a global competition that celebrates students who have created outstanding mobile apps. Our students are working hard on their submissions, which will showcase their creativity, innovation, and technical skills.
As part of this invitation, there was an incursion held at the College on Wednesday 15 November to support our students in building their submissions. During the incursion, our students had the chance to connect with Mr James Dale, a former Swift Challenge winner, Apple engineer, and the founder of ‘Friday Technologies’, an app development studio in Melbourne. They also met with representatives from the Apple Education Future Skills and App Development team and the Apple Education technical team.
Our students were inspired by Mr Dale’s stories about his journey of Swift coding for mobile app development. He started as a high school student who entered the Swift Challenge for the first time in 2016 and won it four times in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2020. He then became an Apple software engineer and later established his own app development studio.
During the incursion, our students presented the mobile apps that they are currently developing to James and the Apple Education team and received valuable feedback and insights to improve their work. They then went into development sprints to rapidly add functionality or refine their app designs under the expert guidance of James and the Apple team. This incursion and opportunity to meet experts in the field of Mobile App development was a memorable and enriching experience for our students. We thank Mr. James Dale and the Apple Education team for providing this unique experience to students of our College.

From Our Kitchen to Yours: Student Creations
In our Year 9 Food Trends class, students ventured into the world of ice cream creation, drawing inspiration from Arnott's biscuits. With these cookies, they crafted their very own ice cream flavours, infusing creativity into the process. The students also designed custom labels for their unique ice cream creations, adding a personalized touch to their tasty innovations. This hands-on project allowed them to explore flavour combinations, product development and marketing, giving them a taste of the food industry's creative side. Try out the recipe:
Easy No-Churn Icecream
Ingredients
2 Cups Heavy Cream
1 Cup Condensed Milk
1 Teaspoon Vanilla essence
Own choice of flavourings - Max 4
1/2 c Chocolate chips, 1/4 c caramel chews, 1 T tablespoon Chocolatesauce, 1/3 c Biscoff, 2 Kit Kats, 1 teaspoon mint essence, 4 chocolateripple biscuits, 1/3 c marshmallows or your own choice.
In a large bowl, use a hand mixer or a stand mixer to whip the cream until stiff peaks occur; be careful not to over-whip.
In another large bowl, whisk the vanilla into the sweetened condensed milk. Gently fold in the whipped cream with a spatula, slowly incorporating the two mixtures together so it stays light and aerated.
This is where you are to add your chosen flavours. Mix the ingredients directly into the cream mixture. Be gentle so as to knockout the air.
Transfer the mixture to an insulated tub or paper containers and freeze for 4-6 hours.

KIC iSCIENCE graduation – Monday 6 November
On the evening of Monday 6 November, students participating in this Term’s KIC iSCIENCE Project graduated the 7-day program. It was a chance for them to present what they had done and learnt to their parents/caregivers and representatives from their schools and industry. Congratulations to Year 10 student Anesu Magombedze who took part, and to all the other students who attended from other schools. We hope that the skills and information they learnt will help shape their future personal and professional journeys.
This program is also endorsed by SCSA (School Curriculum and Standards Authority) and successful completion of the iProject and attendance at the annual KIC iCONFERENCE, held at Murdoch University on Monday 27 November, gives students a C grade WACE unit equivalent towards their WACE (Western Australian Certificate of Education).
“During the KIC program, I did a range of activities and tasks that were all related to science and engineering. We did many things such as site tours, science experiments, a full day experience with Murdoch university, a campus tour on Murdoch university and some volunteering. My favourite part of the program would have been the site tours because we got to talk to professionals in the industry about what it might be like working there and overall seeing the work environment. I would definitely recommend this program to other Year 10 students who either think they might be interested in engineering or do not yet know their career pathway because the program was based around engineering and it provided participants an insight of how working in that type of industry would be like. It also provides more career options in the engineering field that contribute significantly to the engineering profession and little things we have today such as inky, paper, paint and more.
It is also a great opportunity to meet some amazing people who share the same passion and interests as you. On the night of the graduation, I was awarded with a scholarship to participate in the Murdoch University Santos Science Experience being held in December this year. The program is designed to provide students who have an interest in science with an opportunity to engage in a wide range of fascinating science activities under the guidance of scientists who love their work. The program also provides information about further studies in science, technology and engineering. It highlights the wide range of careers that allow students to pursue their interest and abilities in the sciences.”

STEM Resin Chess Sets
Collaborating with our Science Technicians, the Lighthouse students engaged in a STEM activity where they crafted their own personalised resin chess sets. The mixture consisted of resin in a 1:3 ratio, allowing students to select their preferred colours and textures. Silicon moulds were used to pour the resin, and each student successfully created two sets. The upcoming phase of the project involves applying measurement skills to construct chess boards. The students expressed great pride in the final results of their chess sets and enjoyed versing each other.
Sustainability News
This week we celebrated “National Recycling Week”. The students have been learning about the five items to put in the recycle bin and what they get turned into. Plastic bottles become bathers, beanies and benches; cans become cars; glass bottles and jars become road base; paper and cardboard become toilet paper. They also looked at the recycle symbol on different household items, what the symbols mean and made how to dispose of them.
Also, this week the Pre-Primary students had fun making lettuce wraps using freshly picked beetroot, carrot, spinach and tomato from our garden. It was great to see so many of them eating and enjoying the fresh vegetables.
During the Sustainability lessons some students have participated in the “Aussie Bird Count”. They observed different areas around the school for 20 minutes and recorded their results on the Bird Count App. The students were so excited to see a variety of birds while helping Bird Life Australia develop an understanding of the local birds in our school grounds.
Over the last few weeks, the students have enjoyed tasting the ripe mulberries from the mulberry tree in the chicken pen. The kindy students have been picking the mulberry leaves for the silkworms to eat in their classroom. The Year Two students have been finding a variety of bugs in our garden beds. We have been learning about beneficial insects that help our plants to grow well, which help keep our ecosystem healthy.
Thank you to everyone who supported our Market Stall last week. The Green Team did an amazing job promoting Sustainability in our school while selling all our fresh produce. We raised $75 which will go towards buying some fish food and some brushes to clean the aquaponics tanks.
