Arts & Technologies Week - Open Evening

On Thursday 19 October, our wonderful Year 11 Certificate II Hospitality students catered for the Arts & Technologies Week Open Evening. This event was a wonderful way to combine art and culinary skills. This kind of hands-on experience is so valuable for the students, as it allows them to apply what they have learned in their hospitality program and gain real-world experience in event catering.

During the two-day incursion, students had the opportunity to plan the menu, prepare the ingredients, cook the food, and organize the presentation and service of the dishes. This experience is a valuable part of their education, as it teaches them important skills in food preparation, time management, and customer service.

Here is what was on the menu:

  • Pork and apple sausage rolls

  • Pumpkin and goat's cheese quiche

  • Ham and cheese quiche

  • Brioche bun beef sliders

  • Mini Lemon Tarts

  • Macarons filled with chocolate ganache

  • Profiteroles with craquelin filled with creme patisserie

  • Chocolate tart filled with chocolate mousse topped with strawberry pearls

Congratulations to our amazing Hospitality students Anddi Boden, Cael Carson, Natalia Jaramillo and Onyeka Obidike, led by Mrs Edgell!

Year 11 Bake-Off Competition

Students in Year 11 Food Science and Technology class actively participated in a bake off competition as part of an assessment for their course. Competition was strong with other eleven dishes for judges to decide on, and taste of course. Two students excelled in persevering with their original choice for the Bake- Off competition.

Sachiann McKinlay and Christa Bower faced many challenges throughout the trial period, but with their persistence delivered an excellent final product. Their dish was presented to several judges and was a clear winner. Well done. Both were presented with a handmade rolling pin from their teacher in recognition.

Sports & Outdoor Education News

Year 9 ODE Rottnest Trip

On Friday 27 October, two classes of Year 9 Outdoor Education (ODE) ventured over to Rottnest Island for a fun-filled day of navigation, cycling and fishing. The group had an early start to get the 8.30am ferry from Fremantle (a very bumpy ride!) On arrival, they collected their bikes and made their way to The Basin for a swim and Geordie Bay for some fishing. After about hour, each group swapped before joining together and completing a bicycle ride of the northern part of the island. Students enjoyed some free time in the settlement, followed by a last-ditch effort to catch a fish off the Thompson Bay jetty before heading home. As part of our ‘Making Jesus Real’ philosophy at Mother Teresa Catholic College, students were able to identify moments on the expedition where they experienced the Spirit of Jesus in action.

“Something I experienced that was keeping in the Spirit of Jesus was when a man was kind enough to allow my friends and I to sit in his seats on the boat ride back since the boat was packed and there wasn't much space for us to sit.” - Markeisha

“I noticed the spirit of kindness and goodwill, reminiscent of Jesus, in our group as we exhibited good manners and helped the public, such as holding doors open for them.” - Stig

“Something that I experienced during the trip that was keeping with the spirit of Jesus was when we saw a snake on the path and no one ran over the snake or killed the snake. So we were respecting the snakes life and respecting Gods creation.” - Tilly

A big thank you to Mr Norris, Mr Scarterfield, Miss Baxter and Miss Zagari for organising the day and ensuring all students had a great time!

2024 Indonesian Trip - Registrations Open Now

Registrations to participate in the 2024 Indonesian trip are now open. Registrations close on 27 November 2023. For more information, see the information pack below.

Indonesian Wayang Kulit Incursion

In Week 2, Year 7 and 8 students, as well as Year 9 Indonesian students, participated in an Indonesian Wayang Kulit incursion. Wayang Kulit, which translates to ‘shadow puppet’, is a centuries-old Indonesian tradition that bring stories to life through intricate leather puppets. Skilled puppeteers, or ‘dalang’ in Indonesian, narrate stories from Indonesian mythology and folklore, making it a culturally significant form of entertainment and storytelling. After the performance, students had the opportunity to see backstage to learn how the show was conducted.

“We thought the play was very entertaining. We loved how much the music complemented the storyline. We liked the design of the puppets and how their arms were moved as well as how they were moved across the screen. Overall, the performance was very impressive and had a lot of meaning.” - Abbie M., Savannah H. and Olivia J.

“The puppet show was really interesting, and I have seen one before but I did not understand the story as it was in full Indonesian. I was really impressed that this part of the show being in English, upon seeing backstage I thought it was really cool that the puppeteer would create music with one foot and one hand.” - Stella S. and Lucy C.

“I really enjoyed the different singing and the chaotic nature of puppet show. I also enjoyed looking at the backstage and seeing all the different elements of the show.” - Angus F.

“I found the incursion interesting and entertaining. My favourite part was when Hanuman got captured while trying to save Sita. I found the clowns funny and I found myself very intrigued by the story. I liked the music that was played during the show.” - Samantha K.

”I really enjoyed the puppet show because of the different puppets they used such as the clown or the princess. Another thing I enjoyed were the background instruments and how they played. e.g. how the puppeteer play the drum with his foot while holding the puppets in his hand. The best thing was when we went behind the scenes to see how they used the puppets, instruments and the lighting to create shadows.” - Juanita G.

“The show was very interesting, and I found it funny when those clowns came out and they looked very funny. I like the singing and the music. I found the fighting scene and the dragon scenes the best and most interesting. Seeing how they did all the things backstage was fascinating and it was an overall interesting and amazing experience.” Liam C.

Hermione Mohsenin and Kenneth Bayaborda, recently completed a Certificate IV in Business this year with Fremantle Education Centre (FEC). As part of their qualification, students took part in a Networking Expo at FEC where groups of students presented their work on a business to other students on the course and invited guests. The Batter Up stall was very popular with everyone, and the waffles looked and smelt delicious.

Aaliyah Langmaid recently completed a Certificate IV in Preparation for Health and Nursing Studies. This group of students is unique (the first and last one year course) as the qualification is now being delivered over two years. Aaliyah is pictured with the other students who completed the course and, on the individual photo, Jenny Siva Head of Program Nursing and Michelle Boyd, Lecturer – Nursing Portfolio (left to right of photo). In her presentation Michelle commented on how hard the students had to work to complete the course in only four school terms and have been a pleasure to teach. Aaliyah also received a special mention on the day for demonstrating resilience with her studies.

Well done everyone!

Child of the ADF Medallion

Recently, some of our Defence Students were awarded with a ‘Child of the ADF’ medal over the holidays at an official presentation held at Leeuwin Barracks. Abigail (Year 3), Benjamin (Year 1) and Nicholas Winter received the prestigious medals for their resilience and support of their Dad and his duty to Australia and staying strong at home. For much of Abigail's early years, Dad was away on deployment on HMAS Sirius, similarly for Benjamin. For Nicholas, Dad arrived home from deployment the day before he was born. They have been lucky to have him home for most of Nicholas' first years so far with only a short 2 month deployment.

We congratulate Abigail, Benjamin and Nicholas on being awarded these prestigious medals and we thank their father Rob for his service to the country.

Our Defence School Mentor (DSM), Mrs Rachel Esler, provides assistance to Defence students and their families and raises awareness of the unique needs of these families due to the military lifestyle within the school community.
