Junior School Walkathon

Today our Junior School students participated in the College Walkathon! Students had a fantastic time walking (or running) laps of the designated course. After each lap, students were awarded with a raffle ticket to go into the draw for a brand new scooter and helmet, kindly donated by local MLA Reece Whitby. Congratulations to Georgia Harvey (Pre-Primary Wandju) for being the lucky raffle winner! A great morning was had by all, followed by a lovely Subway fundraiser lunch which was organised by the Friends of Mother Teresa (FOMT).

Junior School Spelling Bee

Last week, students in Years 4-6 challenged themselves in the Spelling Bee Competition. Competitors competed in their year level, all showing a great amount of bravery, courage and fantastic sportsmanship for their peers! The top two spellers from Years 4-6 represented the College on Thursday, attending the Interschool Spelling Bee Competition at Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School against six other local schools.

We had an extremely successful day with Raphael Dass receiving the champion trophy for the Year 5 competition and Dylan Chauhan receiving the champion trophy for the Year 6 competition. All six students represented our College brilliantly and gave their absolute best. Some words spelt correctly from our outstanding spellers during the competitions included: stevedore, blancmange and bourgeoisie! Congratulations to all who participated in the Spelling Bee this year!

Year 7 Orientation Day

On Thursday 20 October, we welcomed the incoming Year 7 student cohort for 2023 at their College orientation day. Students had the opportunity to meet their new classmates and get to know each other through a series of icebreaker activities. They were also treated to a series of performances by current students, including a snippet from this year’s College Production of The Wizard of Oz.

After a break for recess, students split up into smaller groups and each had a tour of the College and a class experience of Cooking, Science and Sport. This provided our new Year 7 cohort with a real insight into daily life at Mother Teresa Catholic College. It was wonderful to see students form relationships with one another over the course of the day. We would like to take this opportunity to warmly welcome our Year 7 cohort for 2023. We look forward to seeing you all again next year!

The Arts News

The Arts & Technologies Week - Week 3

This week, the College celebrated Arts & Technologies Week. The Arts & Technologies team organised a series of fantastic events which took place over the course of the week, including:

  • Year 11 Drama - Performance of Hoods

  • Arts and Technologies Exhibition

  • Performing Arts Showcase

It was a fantastic week and great opportunity to showcase our award-winning Arts and Technologies students. We acknowledge their commitment to Mother Teresa Catholic College and thank them for representing us in 2022.

Castaways Sculpture Awards

For the very first time, our College has entered the City of Rockingham Castaways Sculpture Awards. The annual exhibition showcases artworks created from recycled and repurposed materials.

Our Creative Arts team (Years 4, 5 and 6) have been working hard over Term 3 to create their artwork. The sculpture is titled 'Only 300!' and focuses on the plight of the declining little penguin colony on Penguin Island. This project has an emphasis on sustainability with materials used including: recycled plastic bottles, Christmas ornaments, medical tweezers, dressmaking patterns, air-dry clay, chicken wire and expanding foam.

While we did not win an award for our sculpture, we are so proud of our creative students and their commitment to sustainability in art! You can see our sculpture on display at the Castaways Sculpture Exhibition until Sunday 30 October 2022.
Don't forget to vote for us in The People’s Choice Award online: https://culturecounts.cc/s/5BjmyU/splash

Year 11 Music Recital

On Friday 21 October, our Year 11 ATAR and General Music students performed a recital as part of their Music course assessment. The assessment required students to perform two pieces to a live audience, based on their chosen discipline.

The audience was treated to a spectacular show! Each student demonstrated extraordinary musical talent and it was evident that a lot of time and practise went into their performances. Each student performed their solo pieces before joining together as an ensemble. Congratulations to Jessica Ryding (Flute), Lizzie Martin (Vocals), Ashley Lightfoot (Piano) and Benny Ybanez (Vocals) on their fantastic performance!

Science Week - Week 2

Last week, the College celebrated National Science Week. The Science department organised a series of fun and interactive Science demonstrations and quizzes for students which took place over the week.

Our Junior School students were treated to a Science demonstration presented by our resident mad scientist, Mr Van Der Kwast. The demonstration started off with a bang as students learned how to push a pin into a balloon without it popping (after a few failed attempts). The audience was captivated by colourful chemical reactions and a "magical” genie appearing in the form of water vapor and oxygen. They also had a great time lighting bubbles on fire and learning more about various chemicals and elements.

Our Secondary School students had a lot of fun in their Science demonstration too. They made ice cream using only 5 ingredients: milk, cream, vanilla essence, ice and salt. This activity used the freezing power of salt and ice to create ice crystals in milk without a freezer! Who knew Science could be so tasty?! Take a look at some of the highlights below.

Indonesian Dance Incursion

On Wednesday 19 October, our Year 7-10 Indonesian students participated in an Indonesian dance incursion. The incursion was conducted by the amazing Alfira and Murtala from Suara Indonesia Dance Group from NSW. They presented an energetic mix of dance, body percussion and songs to show the diversity of cultures found within the Indonesian archipelago, as well as the historical and narrative spirit of the dances.

Our students loved getting involved in the traditional Indonesian body percussion dances as a big group. Students also picked up many useful Indonesian words and phrases along the way. Thank you Suara Indonesian Dance Group for a highly educational and entertaining presentation. Bagus!

KIC iSCIENCE Project – Congratulations Cody and Luciano

Congratulations to Cody McGill and Luciano Melloni Cruces, who have been selected for the KIC (Kwinana Industries Council) iSCIENCE Project being held this term. The program is for Year 10 students who are aspiring to follow ATAR Science, Math and Technology subjects during Years 11 and 12 and who are considering going on to university at the end of Year 12. They will have the opportunity to explore and understand the breadth of industry in the Kwinana Industrial Area (KIA) and the broad range of science-based career options available.

The KIC iSCIENCE Project is also a program endorsed by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). Successful completion of the program will result in a C grade unit equivalent towards a student’s WACE (Western Australian Certificate of Education). Achievement of this program will also be recorded on a student’s WASSA (Western Australian Statement of Student Achievement).
We wish the boys all the best with the program and hope they make the most of the information and opportunities provided to them.

Sustainability News

The students participated in the ‘Aussie Bird Count’ last week. The students spent 20 minutes observing and recording the native birds on our school grounds. We then sent our information to BirdLife Australia. This was a great way for our students to learn about local native birds, their habitats and the natural world around us.

This week our Pre-primary students had a huge harvest of potatoes they had been growing. Our tiger worms have been very happy eating the fruit scraps from each classroom every day. This is a great way we are reducing our waste going to landfill. We have lots of tadpoles, which the students are watching and eagerly waiting for them to turn into Motorbike frogs.

The Bush Tucker gardens have been getting a makeover by the students. They have been weeding, planting, raking, digging and watering to make the space look beautiful.
